Ahhh Valentine’s Day, the day of love. One of the best parts about being a professional soccer player in the EPL is being loved and adored by all the fans, this love seems to be what keeps them going and able to do what they do best. However, not every player receives this love and others are loved and then later forgotten. Here is a list of the top 10 EPL players, that could really use some of this love this Valentine’s Day.
- James Tomkins
After making over 200 appearances for West Ham you would think James Tomkins would absolutely be adored by the West Ham fans but this really isn’t the case. Dmitry Payet, a player who’s only been at West Ham for about 7 months has been showed more love than Tomkins has even though Tomkins has been at the club since he was 7 years old. It’s not that the West Ham fans hate Tomkins, they just don’t care about him. At age 26 and still awaiting his first cap for England’s senior team, Tomkins could really use some more love to help ignite his career and get to that next level.
- Simon Mignolet
Ever since his $13 million move to Liverpool in 2013, Simon Mignolet has found it very difficult to fill in the shoes of Pepe Reina. His performances have been very inconsistent and he is yet to win over the hearts of the Liverpool fans. With an impressive display at the Capital One Cup recently, pretty much handing Liverpool’s ticket to Wembley after saving two penalty kicks, is this finally Mignolet’s time to gain that long awaited love from the Liverpool fans?
- Memphis Depay
Manchester United are still waiting to see the Memphis Depay they paid $27 million for. To be fair, with the exception of David de Gea and maybe Martial everyone and Manchester United has been underperforming this season but maybe a little more love for the highly rated Dutch winger could give us the Memphis we expected to see.
- Jack Grealish
Ok let’s be honest, everyone on Aston Villa could use some love this Valentine’s Day. But it’s hard to love players on a team that is rooted at the bottom of the table with no signs of survival. At 20 years old and extremely talented, Jack Grealish off the field antics makes its very difficult to gain the love he needs to get over this rough patch in his career. He’s constantly getting in trouble on twitter and seems to be enjoying the party lifestyle over soccer.
- Eliaquim Mangala
“How is Mangala still a city player?”, “How is Mangala the most expensive defender in the EPL?”, “Can Mangala just leave already?” Those are some of the questions every city fan asks when they see Mangala put on the baby blue shirt and attempt to play soccer. I don’t think Mangala would ever be able to win over the City supporters but he at least needs a little love to help get over that “Worst signing ever” label often related to him.
- Saido Berahino
I’m still not exactly sure if the whole Berahino saga is done because West Brom hates him so much for trying to force his way out of the club, that they’ve denied four bids from Tottenham for his services just so they can see him rot on the bench. Or if they love him so much that they’d be devastated to see him leave and are keeping him on the bench so he doesn’t get injured. My gut tells me it’s the first one. West Brom fans, please show him some love, even if it’s just a little maybe he’ll regain the form he found last season. We miss seeing him play.
- Papiss Cisse
Remember when Cisse first moved to the EPL in the 2012 January transfer window scored 13 goals in 14 appearances, including the audacious outside of the foot goal he had from 30 yards out against Petr Cech? Yeah neither does anybody. The Cisse we all knew and loved that season has been long gone. Now competing with the likes of Ayoze Perez, Mitrovic, and Doumbia for first team action Cisse is going to need all love he can get to get back to doing what he knows best, scoring.
- Eden Hazard
Last seasons Player of the Year has struggled this year to find good form. After winning the battle of forcing Mourinho out of Chelsea, the Belgian is still struggling to employ the same form he had last season under interim manager, Guus Hiddink. A little bit of love this Valentine’s Day would very much be appreaciated by Hazard especially with Euro 2016 coming up.
- Every Crystal Palace Striker
With the likes of Fraizer Campbell, Marouane Chamakh, Connor Wickham, Dwight Gayle and the recently added, Emmanuel Adebayor you wouldn’t think that Crystal Palaces leading goal scorer would be defender Scott Dann, but yet it is. The center back alone has more goal than all the Crystal Palace strikers combined. These strikers need some of the love Scott Dann is getting to start scoring again.
What else does Giroud need to do to win over the Arsenal fans? Since his move to Arsenal in 2012, Giroud has scored at least 11 goals each season but that still hasn’t been enough to win over the Arsenal fans. They believe Arsenal needs a more world class striker leading their line order to win the EPL. However, now sitting in 3rd place being 2 points off 1st place, Arsenal fans are beginning to believe this could be their year. So maybe Giroud will finally get the love he deserves. Poor guy!
